When I look at the number of books I’ve read last month I can’t help feeling like I’ve failed a little bit when it comes to reading and listening to audiobooks but looking at page numbers and minutes March wasn’t actually that bad. Four out of the six books I’ve finished were quite massive and regarding how busy I was for most of the month I’m almost a bit surprised that I even managed to read that much in the first place. Also I’m really happy with the quality of last month’s books and I can’t remember the last time 50% of the books I’ve read were 5-star reads (2 out of 3 were re-reads but still…) (mehr …)

Selbst der beste Polizist kann nicht jedes Leben retten – diese schmerzhafte Erfahrung muss auch der Kopenhagener Kommissar und psychologische Vermittler Niels Bentzon machen, als er mitten in der Nacht in die Innenstadt der dänischen Hauptstadt gerufen wird, wo eine weibliche Person kurz davor steht, von einer Brücke in den Tod zu springen. Als Bentzon am Ort des Geschehens eintrifft, findet er dort eine offenbar verwirrte oder unter dem Einfluss von Drogen stehende und zudem völlig unbekleidete Frau vor. Der Unterhändler gibt sein Bestes, um sie von ihrem Unterfangen anzubringen, findet jedoch keinen Zugang zu der Frau und muss hilflos mit ansehen, wie diese sich schließlich von der Brücke stürzt und beim Aufprall auf den Boden sofort stirbt – zum ersten Mal überhaupt ist es Bentzon nicht gelungen, einen Selbstmordversuch zu verhindern. Der April mag in Hinsicht auf die großen Namen vielleicht nicht ganz so spektakulär ausfallen wie der März, trotzdem dürfen sich Krimi- und Thrillerfans auch in diesem Monat wieder auf einige Highlights freuen. So gibt es z.B. endlich wieder etwas neues von John Katzenbach, Kristina Ohlsson startet eine neue Krimi-Dilogie und einer der heißesten Thriller des Jahres erscheint nun auch auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt – lange Lesenachmittage in der Frühlingssonne scheinen somit garantiert 😉 (mehr …)

I’m usually quite a skeptic when it comes to young adult thrillers because as a hardcore thriller and crime reader I often find them quite underwhelming and simply not dark, violent or gripping enough. I have way too often made the experience that YA thrillers or horror novels just can’t manage to shock or scare me the way I want it a murder mystery to do and also thrillers for a younger audience unfortunately tend to have another feature that often annoys the shit out of me: there’s usually some kind of redundant romance or teenage drama because apparently teenage readers need that to be able to relate to a book – at least that’s what authors and publishers seem to think and YA novels without romantic influences apparently seem to be a no-go. Es ist eigentlich nur ein Set von bemalten oder bedruckten Papierkärtchen, trotzdem hat das Kartenspiel in seiner Historie schon über unzählige Schicksale entschieden. Seit Jahrhunderten sind Menschen von der Macht des Spiels fasziniert und auch wenn Poker, Skat, Doppelkopf oder Mau-Mau für die meisten lediglich zum kurzweiligen Zeitvertreib dienen, so stürzen die Karten immer wieder diejenigen ins Verderben, die sich dem Reiz des Glücksspiels nicht mehr entziehen können und Haus und Hof im Kasino oder in dunklen Hinterzimmern verspielen. Daher wurde das Kartenspiel früher von der Kirche als „Des Teufels Gebetbuch“ verdammt – eine Bezeichnung, die den deutschen Bestsellerautor Markus Heitz für seinen gleichnamigen Urban-Mystery-Thriller inspiriert hat. Before I started reading „Rivers of London“ by Ben Aaronovitch I had often heard about people describing it as „Harry Potter for adults“ (which sounds really wrong to me because why wouldn’t the Harry Potter series itself already be for adults?) and while this had definitely made me more curious about the book it was never my main motivation to read it. I was primarily excited for the first book in the Peter Grant series because of two reasons: a) because it is a crime novel set in London (which is my favorite city of all those I’ve visited so far) and b) because it is a crime novel with MAGIC. I found the idea of a British policeman who is not only a wizard (or in this case a wizard’s apprentice) but also investigating crimes not in some made-up fantasy world but in the London of today pretty intriguing and had high hopes for a creative and original murder mystery with a magical touch. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t really look as if I’m successfully restraining myself from buying a lot of book this year but the truth is that I’ve only bought four physical books by myself in the first two months of 2017 which I’m actually a little bit proud of. „Unfortunately“ my TBR isn’t really getting any smaller because once again I got a few review copies and surprising book mail – I’m definitely not complaining though 😀 (mehr …)

This month’s roundup is going to be super long – but that’s not because I read so many books last month, it’s because I was too lazy to write a January roundup so that this one covers both January and February. That’s good for me because the first month in 2017 was actually quite embarrassing when it comes to reading since I’ve only finished one book, one short story and one audiobook. Fortunately I was much more successful in February and it felt nice to have a strong reading month again. (mehr …)
