Since the first weekend of August my daily schedule basically consists of three things: sleeping, working and watching the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. I’ve been an Olympic superfan since I was 9 years old and watched the Summer Games for the first time in Atlanta in 1996 and I’ve hardly missed any important Olympic event on TV ever since. I watch absolutely everything, whether it’s soccer, track and field, swimming, equestrianism or even gymnastics, and when I found out about the Olympic Book Tag by Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight I knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist doing it since it seems like the perfect book tag for me. So let the games begin!

Olympic Book Tag

The Martian – Andy Weir
… because how can you not love a book that starts with the sentence „I’m pretty much fucked.“? When I read this opening line I knew I was going to love this book, so it was no surprise that „The Martian“ ended up becoming one of my favorite books EVER.

Olympic Book Tag2

Blackbirds – Chuck Wendig
This book might not provide the typical „best friends go on an life-changing road trip adventure together“ kind of road trip but if you like the dark, violent and fucked-up version of that then „Blackbirds“ is the book to go with.

Olympic Book Tag3

The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
„A good love triangle“ – does such a thing even exist? Usually love triangles are a big pain in the ass for me but since I had to pick one I decided to go with Katniss/Gale/Peeta because it was at least one where I found the character dynamics and development interesting and because it didn’t annoy the shit out of me.

Olympic Book Tag4

The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
So many people absolutely LOVE this book but even though I liked the atmosphere a lot somehow the story didn’t work for me. I made the mistake to choose the audiobook and all these jumps back and forth in time totally confused me and made it super difficult for me to follow the storylines and in addition to that I couldn’t relate to the characters at all.

Olympic Book Tag5

Nil – Lynne Matson
This book is set in summer, on a tropical island that comes with a lot of beach and the characters actually do play beach volleyball in between their efforts to stay alive, so how could I have picked a more perfect book for this category? 😀

Olympic Book Tag6

A Storm of Swords – George R.R. Martin
Red wedding – do I have to say more?

Olympic Book Tag7

Shutter Island – Dennis Lehane
This book has not only lots of small twists and turns but also my favorite plot twist ever and I’m actually a bit sad that I can never read it for the first time again and be as shocked as I was the first time.

Olympic Book Tag8

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – Joanne K. Rowling
I can’t remember that I ever actually sobbed because of a book but the ending of the 6th Harry Potter novel definitely killed me and I don’t think I’ve ever been that sad because of a fictional story before and ever since.

Olympic Book Tag9

All the Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr
Slow-paced books often can easily get boring for me but even though Anthony Doerr took quite some time to tell this moving story I enjoyed it a lot and definitely felt rewarded for being so patient with this book.

Olympic Book Tag10

Jurassic Park – Michael Crichton
This dinosaur thriller might not seem like the perfect children’s book but since I wasn’t allowed to watch the movie when it came out (possibly because I was only 6 years old back then^^) I had to find other ways to get my dinosaur dose and read the book instead – not at the age of 6 of course but when I was good enough at reading to try it. I’m pretty sure I didn’t understand everything but still loved this novel to pieces.

Olympic Book Tag11

The Knife of Never Letting Go – Patrick Ness
I was so close to listing „Jurassic Park“ again but then decided that maybe it would be better to go with actual animals, so I picked the first Chaos Walking book instead. I really couldn’t care less about pets but since Patrick Ness managed to make me care for a dog I think TKoNLG definitely deserves this medal. Congrats, Manchee!

Olympic Book Tag12

S. – J.J. Abrams, Doug Dorst
I didn’t pick this book because I was close to DNFing it but because finishing it was literally a struggle since reading this admittedly very original kind of story definitely felt like hard work for me due to all the different layers and notes that made it quite a challenge to follow this story and it took me hours over hours to read it.

Olympic Book Tag13

Harry Potter series – Joanne K. Rowling
Why should I limit myself to listing just one great friendship when I can choose ALL the great friendships of the Harry Potter series instead?

Olympic Book Tag14

Private Games – James Patterson
This thriller does not only feature one Olympic sport but the full Olympic Summer Games of 2012 and comes with lots of actual Olympic venues, competitions like diving, gymnastics or track and field and even includes the opening and closing ceremonies – the perfect book for an Olympic superfan like me.

Are you interested in the Olympic games?
Which books would you pick for the different categories?

  • This was such a fun tag to read! Your explanation for „Blackbirds“ made me laugh. XD I definitely agree with your assessment of „The Night Circus,“ too. The only one that I really disagree with is „The Hunger Games.“ The love triangle was actually one of the things that made me hate the series by the end. /o\ I think maybe I’d pick „The Fixer for that category because for some reason I wasn’t bothered at all by that love triangle.

If I had a blog already, I might pick „Fangirl“ for the opening ceremony. Not only did it hook me on the first page, but it also seems appropriate for fangirling about the Olympics starting. „Daughter of the Forest“ could work for golf, except that sounds so insulting to the book. XD „The Half-Blood Prince“ would for sure be my swimming book, and either that series or Tamora Pierce could work for trampoline. I don’t think any series could fit synchronized swimming better! I would have to go through my Goodreads search to find a good book for the bonus category. The only thing that immediately comes to mind is „Bend It Like Beckham,“ which I LOVED back in high school, except it’s a movie.

    • Haha, btw are we going to re-read the Miriam Black series before the fourth book comes out early next year? ;D

I still want to give „The Night Circus“ another try though and read it for myself instead of listening to the audiobook to find out if maybe that works better for me.

OMG I can’t believe we actually disagree about something! XD I think I liked (or at least didn’t hate) the THG love triangle because I found it important for the story and it wasn’t just a love triangle for a love triangle’s sake 😀

You mentioning „The Fixer“ reminds me that we still need to start that Criminal Minds YA series! ;D

      „If I had a blog already“ WHY DON’T YOU HAVE A BLOG ALREADY? ;P

I can’t believe you’ve seen (and loved!) „Bend it like Beckham“. We should watch it again some time! (Btw, for whatever reason it’s called „Kick it like Beckham“ in Germany xD)

  • It is true that *most* love triangles are disasters, but you definitely read my mind with The Hunger Games- it’s what I had planned on picking before I realized I’d already used it haha. Manchee… well, obviously. Patrick Ness feeds on readers‘ tears I think, so it makes sense. And Nil is an amazingly good fit, well done 😀 So glad you decided to do the tag!!

And I am definitely interested in the Olympics. Though I’m mostly there for the swimming, I end up watching all the other stuff too- it’s like I can’t turn away. So I’ll be watching two random countries playing water polo at 3am, wondering what has happened to my life. But hey, it’s only once every 4 years, right? 😉

    • Ha, I’m glad we agree on THG! That category was quite difficult for me because I absolutely HATE love triangles XD

I’m glad you came up with that tag, it was so much fun doing it! 🙂

Where do you live that water polo is at 3 a.m. for you? I always have to set an alarm for 3 a.m. to watch swimming or Usain Bolt XD

„But hey, it’s only once every 4 years, right?“ Well, what about Winter Olympics? ;D
