“Top 10 Tuesday” is a weekly meme by The Broke and the Bookish

If you can be sure about one thing then it’s the fact that our bookish wishlists are always full to bursting point so that we didn’t have to think long about finding books we’re excited for in the second half of 2017. What was actually quite a challenge was cutting these lists down to just 10 books but we’re very happy with the result and optimistic the listed books will indeed be real highlights and hopefully even become new favorites.

The Song of the Orphans – Daniel Price (04.07.)
We’ve already read this one, so trust us when we say you should pre-order it. The Flight of the Silvers was amazing, but Daniel Price outdid himself with The Song of the Orphans, and you don’t want to miss this fantastic science fiction series.

The Lost Ones – Sheena Kamal (25.07.)
The Lost Ones, also known as Eyes Like Mine, features a protagonist who’s been compared to Lisbeth Salander and Harry Hole, which alone is enough to make us want to read it. However, it also catches our attention because it’s a diverse thriller, and those are hard to come by.

A Man of Shadows – Jeff Noon (01.08.)
A science fiction mystery, a serial killer, and an A+ cover? Sign us up!

The Dire King – William Ritter (22.08.)
We’ll be sad to say goodbye to Jackaby and Abigail, but we’re looking forward to seeing how their story wraps up.

The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye – David Lagercrantz (07.09.)
Even though David Lagercrantz’s previous Millennium novel wasn’t perfect (but way better than expected!), we can’t say no to more books about Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Hopefully this one will feel a bit more like Stieg Larsson’s original trilogy.

Paradox Bound – Peter Clines (26.09.)
After loving The Fold and 14, we’re desperate for more stories from that universe. Until then, we’ll take anything we can get from Peter Clines, whose writing is both thrilling and humorous.

Sleeping Beauties – Stephen King & Owen King (26.09.)
It’s Stephen King (and son). Need we say more?

Origin – Dan Brown (03.10.)
Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code are still among our all-time favorite thrillers and while The Lost Symbol and Inferno couldn’t quite live up to their predecessors we don’t think we’ll ever get tired of Dan Brown’s conspiracies and his unusual hero Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor with the Micky Mouse watch who just can’t help saving the world over and over again.

Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier – Mark Frost (02.11.)
We were both surprised at how much we enjoyed The Secret History of Twin Peaks, and we’re anticipating that the second volume will be just as captivating. Also we’ll just never get tired of books that use the dossier style to tell their stories.

Artemis – Andy Weir (14.11.)
It’s hard to imagine anything living up to The Martian, but our expectations for this one are still through the roof. If it’s even half as hilarious as The Martian, we’ll be happy.

Are the books listed above on your wishlist, too?
Which upcoming 2017 releases are you excited about?

  • I just bought Flight of the Silvers so I need to get to that still before the new book. I had no idea before today there was a new Dan Brown out. I am excited for the new Andy Weir too. Great list!!

Aaah, I’m so excited for you! I hope you love FotS as much as we do. 🙂
Haha, I was surprised when I heard about the Dan Brown book, too. I only read the others last year, though, so it doesn’t feel like as big of a gap to me. I really hope Artemis is as good as The Martian!

  • I’ve been meaning to read the Jackaby books, but I didn’t realise another one was coming out. If thats the series wrapped up, I’ll just have to binge read all four.

They’re perfect for binging! I’m tempted to reread the first three, just so I can binge. ?

  • Okay, so I’ve not heard of any of these books? Which probably says a lot about our mutual book tastes. I don’t really read thrillers. Anyway, some of these look cool–Jackaby, for instance, and Artemis.

Haha, if it makes you feel any better, my list would have looked very different if it were two or three years ago. Sebastian got me hooked on mysteries and thrillers! Have you read The Martian? I’m hoping Artemis is equally hilarious.

  • Looks like there are some fab releases coming up! 🙂 There’s just too much to keep up with!

  • I’m in love with your list! I had no idea Peter Clines was coming out with another book. Dan Brown, Stephen King, Andy Weir. I may need to change up my top 10!

    • Von Maraia am 31. Mai 2017 um 16:08

Thanks! ? I somehow missed (or forgot) the news about Peter Clines‘ new book, too. Have you read his others?

  • The Daniel Price books sounds interesting. I will have to check that out. Thanks!

I hope you do! The author is also super nice and interactive with his readers, which makes it even better. ?

  • I’m super intrigued by A Man of Shadows. One day I will explore why I enjoy serial killer books so much. Happy reading and great list!

  • I still need to read the second and third Jackaby books; I enjoyed the first one!

  • Just when I was fairly sure my TBR couldn’t get any bigger… here we are. I am clearly going to need to read The Flight of the Silvers, that sounds so good! Sleeping Beauties sounds fabulous, of course, as does The Lost Ones. Yep, LOTS to add to my list! These are fabulous choices!

Lol, I can’t say I’m sorry. 😛 FotS really is amazing, so I hope you get to read it soon! The author is also super friendly, and he enjoys interacting with his readers, which I personally find really nice. Thanks, Shannon!

  • I can’t believe I forgot to put The Dire King on my list, I love the Jackaby series! I’m also very excited about Andy Weir’s next novel.

  • I had no idea that Andy Weir was releasing another book– this is so exciting!! I really enjoyed The Martian (and basically anything set in outer space) so hopefully Artemis doesn’t disappoint. I’m going to try really hard to not let all the hype surrounding it set my expectations too high, though.

    Great list! 🙂

    • Von Maraia am 3. Jun 2017 um 17:10

I hope it doesn’t disappoint, either! What other space novels have you read? I really liked Six Wakes and Illuminae, and what I’ve read of The Expanse series so far.
      Thanks, Holly. ?

  • I’m actually disappointed in myself for not having read Flight of the Silvers yet, especially since I won my copy for free! I do plan on reading it though, I just feel less motivated to read books that are a part of series that aren’t finished than those that are. It’s like why read it now when I’ll likely forget everything before the sequel is published when I can binge a series at once? (Well that and I just haven’t been reading a lot in general, whoops.) Is it just a duology with The Song of Orphans being the last, or are there more planned?

I’d say the other book I’m somewhat curious about is The Dire King. I actually haven’t read any of the other books in the series but those covers always catch my eye and I’m pretty sure if I didn’t have 80 books on my TBR already and just went to the bookstore to randomly buy a book I’d probably end up grabbing a copy. I don’t even know what it’s about, haha.

Upcoming releases I’m excited about for 2017? Well, I don’t plan on buying any because I’m not allowed to increase my TBR until after I move to London, but I’m obviously looking forward to the new Patrick Ness novel, Release (I guess it’s okay in the UK already but not in the US until September). There’s other books by authors I like publishing that I’m sure I’ll read eventually, but that’s the only one I knew off the top of my head because I don’t really pay attention to any other authors. (Though eventually I’m going to read some more Kristoff and that might change. I love the books of his I’ve read so far.)

Knowing you, I think it’s best for you to wait until the third book is out before you start! (I think there are only three.) I’d rather you read and enjoy all of them than give up after the first.

I really like the colors, too. They’re so vibrant. The inside is pretty great, too. ;P

I’ve seen so many mediocre reviews of Release, and now I’m not even sure I want to read it. /o\ But I imagine you’ll want to add it to your Ness collection regardless. You haven’t read Nevernight yet, have you?
